And calling all mommies...I need some advice...
My little man is almost 4 months and has hit a phase of no longer sleeping through the night. I thought maybe it was a growth spurt as he is ravenous a little earlier than usual the past few days, but I thought if it was a growth spurt he would be hungry around 4 or 5 am...instead of just getting hungry an hour earlier than usual (around 6am). He seems to be waking around 11:30 and then again around 3...he moves his legs and arms a lot so I thought it was gas but he's not really burping or pooting (that we are hearing anyway). He just seems really squirmy. He has had several big bowel movements early in the morning though so I've been wondering if those have been working through during the night. Any ideas? Any suggestions? I just keep praying that it is a phase that will end very soon!

It may be a growth spurt, and it may be the bowel movements, but I doubt the bowels would cause him to be waking that often. Does he seem like they are hurting when he wakes up?
ReplyDeleteMost babies go through periods of waking up more frequently around 4 months. Especially after naps (the 45 minute wake up). He may be overtired and working on adjusting to his new daytime routine at daycare. Sometimes that can take a little while to catch up to them and then it hits them all of a sudden. If he's overtired you might want to try putting him down a few minutes early and see how it goes. Also, if you're bottle feeding you can try giving him an extra ounce and seeing how that goes too.
I highly highly highly recommend the book "Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child." We started really using some of the tips around 4 months and it was great. I also know tons of people who swear by the book, too.
You also might want to talk to the daycare providers to make sure he's on the nap schedule you want. By this age most babies will have developed a routine morning nap/nap time, and will still be working on establishing their pattern for a second and possible third nap. If he's not getting his naps in at school, he may be having trouble sleeping at night.
4 months was also when we'd start letting Charlotte try to self soothe more. We'd give her a little more time before we went in and about 75% of the time she'd put herself back to sleep within about 10 minutes at night. By this age they are beginning to grasp the cause and effect idea, so it's a good time to start allowing a little bit more time to self soothe.
Sorry he's not sleeping as well! I hope it gets better soon!
Like Emily, my first thought was that it is the 4 month wakeful. And as soon as you figure this one out, he'll throw something else in there to keep you on your toes. :) Good luck!
